 TOP TIPS

Nutrition
After the festive period I bet there are a few of us out there that are saying “never again” when looking at our expanded waistlines and vowing to diet diet diet. Well let me make you feel better by telling you that in northern Europe, winter is not the time for extreme dieting. We need to conserve energy and plan to make changes in spring. However we do not want to continue to stress out bodies after the bashing it may have had over the festive period. So here are some simple things you can do.

As a priority
Review your intake of stimulants: Sugar, Salt, Caffeine and Alcohol. We all know these play havoc with our energy levels, hormone balance, mental acuity and weight. Rather than aiming to cut them all out, set a goal of reducing them overall and keeping it that way.

1. Alcohol
Try to make Monday to Thursday alcohol free. That way when it comes to the weekend you can enjoy a few glasses of wine, without mentally beating yourself up and thereby piling on more stress.

2. Caffeine
You may find it acceptable and therefore doable to have one cup of freshly brewed coffee in the morning and make a point of really enjoying it; and there after for the rest of the day consume alternative, low caffeine hot drinks or simply water.

3. Sugar
Swap the Hot Chocolate for a Black Chai tea. Black tea is rich in antioxidants and the ‘Chai’ spices - black pepper, nutmeg, cinnamon- are warming, revitalising and add extra flavour which can be lacking in some herbal teas. That afternoon tea break when the biscuit tin comes out can in time be replaced with a revitalizing cup of green tea and a piece of fruit and a palmful of nuts.

4. Salt
Cutting down on the alcohol often results in you automatically reducing your intake of salty snacks. However you may find you get a real weak spot in the day. This will be early evening when they have come in from work, college - and there’s the temptation to have a handful of crisps, peanuts and so on, especially if there are packets leftover from Christmas.

Two ways to avoid this weakness can be:

i. Change your routine. So when you come in from work… do some meditation, have a shower, check emails, help the children with their homework, do a Sudoku – divert your attention from the snacking.

ii. Change the snack! Have some chopped carrots in the fridge and nibble on these with (or preferably without) a little hummus or have a couple of savoury rice cakes or some oatcakes. Something substantial and satisfying to keep you going until dinner.

You may well find by Spring and Summertime when your desire for stimulants decrease, then that can be the time to have a go at stopping that morning coffee, ditching the digestives and afternoon tea break.

Gradually cutting down will help you sustain the changes you are making.

Good luck and have a happy and healthy 2009.

 THE TEAM

Welcome to Jamie who joined Natures Ways at the end of November.

Jamie is fully qualified at the highest level in all things Beauty. She completed 3 years training at Stockton Riverside College and worked in a Middlesbrough salon before joining Natures Ways.

Comments I have had about Jamie’s treatments include:

  • “That is the best facial I have ever had”,
  • “She has a nice firm touch when massaging, I felt wonderful after the treatment”
  • “I was so impressed with the pedicure: the treatment was 1st class and the length of time the polish stayed on without chipping was fantastic”
  • “Her attention to detail when tinting my brow and lashes was excellent, she made sure I was completely happy with everything”
  • “The last two French manicures I had at other salons were taken off as soon as I got home as I was so disappointed with them. I was therefore a little apprehensive when I asked Jamie to give me a French manicure for a special event I was attending. I shouldn’t have worried the whole treatment was excellent”
Jamie is quickly building up a loyal client base and is keen to keep learning new techniques. She is constantly working at upgrading her skills and knowledge so that she can provide the best service possible to her clients.

Good Luck Jamie.

 WELLBEING NEWS

The Bowen Technique, which we introduced in 2007, is going from strength to strength.

I would like to thank all of you who have recommedned it to your friends and family.

It is an impressive remedial tool to assist with structural conditions but as many of you know it helps with much more than physical conditions. Bowen is not only for times when we are in pain or discomfort but it can be used ot keep us in good shape, so if you have had a problem in the past are you ready for a top up? If not, here's wishing you continued good health.

I hope you have enjoyed this issue and i will try to bring you news and offers on a monthly basis. If there is anything you would like to see in the newsletter or on the web site please let me know.

Wishing you happy and healthy living,

Karen Owens
